A cost figure is only meaningful when its assumptions and exclusions travel with it.
Separate the components
Moneysmart identifies spreads, commissions and financing costs as possible forex trading costs. Record each component separately rather than treating a single advertised spread as the total. The applicable charges depend on the actual product and account documentation.
Define a research scenario
Before estimating anything, specify the instrument, account currency, notional size, opening and closing assumptions, and expected holding period. Label the scenario hypothetical. A calculation based on stated terms is different from a measurement of what a client actually paid in live trading.
Do not combine a minimum advertised spread with an unrelated commission schedule and present the result as a typical cost.
Read the less visible conditions
Check how overnight funding is calculated, whether conversions apply and whether the account terms describe separate service charges. Record the charging currency and timing. If a fee is conditional or a rate changes, preserve the rule and the date rather than converting it into a timeless number.
Proposed cost worksheet: component · calculation basis · currency · triggering condition · source document · document date · uncertainty.
Keep cost research within its limits
A fee estimate does not establish the quality of execution, platform reliability or the suitability of leveraged trading. Moneysmart describes CFDs as complex products with significant risks and costs. FactFX does not publish measured spreads, execution statistics or a cheapest-broker ranking.
